Preparing Your Business for AI Agent Commerce

AI Agent Commerce: Preparing Product Data and Purchase Workflows
Category:Search & Ads

A shopping assistant can help a buyer compare options, but completing a purchase introduces different responsibilities. Product data, availability, authorisation, payment, and after-sales support all need to work together. Businesses exploring agent-assisted commerce should prepare reliable information and controlled transactions before treating autonomous buying as a new sales channel.

Separate discovery, recommendation, and transaction

Map the stages of the journey. Discovery helps a buyer find a product or supplier; recommendation compares suitability; transaction creates an order or another commitment. A system may support one stage without supporting the others. Do not assume that appearing in an AI answer means your store can accept an order from that assistant.

Describe the intended use case precisely. A buyer's assistant might compare delivery options, assemble a shortlist, or prepare a cart for approval. Each requires different information and permissions. Treat a proposed workflow as a design scenario until the selected platform and your commerce system have demonstrated that they support it.

For a hypothetical office supplier, the first useful task might be helping a procurement manager compare compatible printer cartridges. That is a narrower and more testable goal than asking an agent to purchase anything the company may need. Start with a task whose errors and success conditions are easy to recognise.

Make product and service information unambiguous

Give each item a stable identifier and a clear description of its variant, dimensions, compatibility, and included components. Keep units and currencies explicit. A product title alone may not distinguish a single item from a pack or a standard model from an optional configuration.

For services, explain scope, prerequisites, location coverage, and the process for obtaining a quote. A service that requires discovery should not be represented as an immediately purchasable fixed package unless that is genuinely how it is sold. Machine-readable information should reflect the real commercial model.

Review information across the page, feed, and checkout. If one source describes delivery as included and another adds it later, an assistant and a human buyer can both form the wrong expectation. Resolve contradictions at the source rather than asking an AI system to guess which version is current.

Keep structured information aligned with visible facts

Use established formats supported by the channels you actually use. Google's product structured data documentation explains product information for Google search experiences. That documentation is not a universal integration contract for every shopping agent; each platform's requirements need their own review.

Make sure any feed or structured markup agrees with the visible product page. Price, availability, and variant information should not drift between systems. Assign ownership for updates and decide how stale data is detected. A technically valid feed containing outdated information is still a poor commercial foundation.

Define what the buyer is authorising

Before an agent places an order, the buyer should understand the item, quantity, total charge, delivery details, and relevant terms. Design confirmation around the consequence of the action. Preparing a basket is different from charging a payment method or accepting a recurring commitment.

Keep authority limited. A purchasing assistant may be allowed to research options without permission to spend, or to purchase only within a defined budget and category. Enforce those boundaries in the transaction system rather than relying on conversational instructions alone. Require renewed confirmation when a material detail changes.

For business procurement, account permissions may involve several people. A requester, approver, and payer can have different roles. Preserve that structure instead of treating access to a chat session as proof that the user can authorise every transaction for the organisation.

Engineer the order path for ordinary failures

Check availability at the point required by your fulfilment process, not only when the product was first displayed. If an item becomes unavailable or its price changes, explain the change and obtain the appropriate confirmation. Do not silently substitute another item because the agent considers it similar.

Prevent duplicate orders when requests are retried. A slow response can cause a user or system to submit the same action again. The commerce system should recognise the repeated operation and report its actual state. Keep pending, failed, and confirmed orders distinct so a generated message cannot accidentally become the source of truth.

Provide a clear recovery route for payment or delivery failures. The buyer needs a receipt, an order reference, and a way to reach the seller. Agent involvement should not make it harder to understand who is responsible for fulfilment, cancellation, or a refund request.

Preserve support and policy clarity

Publish understandable delivery, return, cancellation, and contact information for the offer. Where requirements differ by product or location, make those differences visible before commitment. Have the relevant owners review the terms for your actual operation and markets; a generic AI-generated policy should not define the business's obligations.

Ensure customer support can see how an order was created and what was confirmed. If a buyer disputes a quantity or delivery instruction, staff need an intelligible record of the transaction rather than only a conversational summary. Preserve the approved details without collecting unnecessary personal information.

Keep human checkout and support routes usable. Customers may prefer to complete the transaction themselves or may need help when an assistant encounters a limitation. Agent-assisted commerce should add a route to purchase, not remove the dependable route that already exists.

Pilot a constrained catalogue and measure outcomes

Select a small group of straightforward items or a narrow enquiry workflow. Test product identification, comparisons, confirmations, duplicate requests, unavailable stock, and cancellation paths. Include cases where the right outcome is to ask the buyer a question or hand over to a person.

Measure correct orders, fulfilment success, returns caused by misunderstanding, support effort, and contribution after costs. Compare with the existing channel using similar products and customer situations. A higher number of automated interactions is not useful if it creates more incorrect orders or expensive support cases.

Expand when the transaction record, operational ownership, and customer experience are dependable. Standards and platform capabilities may change, so keep integrations modular and review current documentation before committing to a new channel. Reliable catalogue data remains valuable even if a particular agent workflow is not yet suitable.

Key Takeaways

  • Distinguish product discovery from authority to place an order.
  • Maintain clear identifiers, variants, scope, and commercial terms.
  • Follow each channel's documented data and integration requirements.
  • Verify confirmations, handle retries, and preserve support accountability.
  • Pilot a narrow workflow and measure correct fulfilled outcomes.
